WHAT WE DO

Hip-Hop Literacy

The Hip Hop Literacy Program is an interactive and fun way of learning about Rhythm and Poetry. The origins of Hip Hop culture, the history of rap, how to improve your writing skills are some of the topics covered. Rap is a language that speaks to young people in a powerful way, which is why we use it to engage them. Our inspirational rap artists will have students appreciating and enjoying the spoken and written word. This program has proven to be very effective, especially with disengaged students.

We use proven strategies to:

  • Improve writing skills and expand vocabulary
  • Develop speaking and listening skills
  • Encourage critical thinking
  • Explore poetic devices employed in rap e.g. rhyme schemes, metaphors, similes, punch lines, wordplay etc.
  • Build up student’s confidence

“Our students really enjoyed the Hip Hop Literacy sessions, which showed how they could have fun with words, rhythm and rhyme. The rap artist really connected with them and was funny but also inspiring about issues such as the need to set yourself challenges and aim high, to believe in yourself and to share worries and problems with someone else. I wanted them to see that poetry could be cool and now they do!”

Full day workshops

A full day of workshops can be for up to 4 classes (assemblies also available). Students will take part in a mixture of presentations and interactive activities giving them the opportunity to create their own raps or poems and perform them at the end of the session. This is great if you are looking for a fun day or 2 of engaging students and inspiring their minds through lyrics and music. We also have longer residencies to focus on bigger outcomes.

12 week residency

We run a 12-week programme (one session a week) for a class. The students take part in an array of interactive activities. They will analyse lyrics, learn the ingredients of writing, watch an exciting Hip Hop presentation and participate in writing and performance exercises that will help them create their very own raps or poems. At the end of the 12 weeks, the students will perform in front of a live audience.

During the 12 weeks, students will have the opportunity to create either a school music video or work on an anthology of their work. Each participant will receive a copy as well as a few copies for the school library.

This course is perfect for giving students time to build up their literacy skills, and improving their confidence.

6 week residency

We also run a shorter 6-week programme (one session a week) for a class, where students will learn new innovative writing techniques and will have the opportunity to create and perform their very own raps or poems to an audience at the end of the course.

This is great for schools who may not have time to complete the 12-week program but still want to inspire their students and improve their literacy skills through music and creative writing. For schools outside of London we can condense the 6-week course into one week. One session a day for 5 days.

Student of Life has a number of facilitators (poets, rappers, authors etc) who are masters in their respective fields, have valid DBS clearance and work well with young people. Creating a safe space for learning, fun and creativity.

We work with a class group size, so around 30 students at a time. We require a member of staff to be present also. For rap performances and talks we can perform to a whole assembly, be it a whole school, key stage or year group.

Send an email to info@studentoflife.co.uk stating that you’d like to book our programme and we’ll fix dates and make it happen.
